DescriptionSplash created by a drop of milk against a highly contrasted and darkly muddled surface and background.Gallery LabelMilk Drop directly references the stop-action photograph of Harold Edgerton, who used ultra-high-speed photography to record the trajectory of a milk drop as it fell into a pool of the liquid.
Vik Muniz rendered his version in chocolate syrup before photographing the drawing. Working with a perishable drawing material required Muniz to photograph the piece while it was still glistening and gooey to freeze the moment. This conceptual connection between time and photography also informed Muniz’s choice of Edgerton’s iconic photograph as a source image.
