DescriptionWhole-plate modern daguerreotype of a hand housed in a modern leather case with 2-ply black paper board window and cover glass.Exhibition History
Rotation 22. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art,
Kansas City, MO, August 10, 2016 – January 8, 2017, no cat.
Jerry Spagnoli crafts contemporary daguerreotypes that display both his technical mastery and an astute understanding of how this demanding process informs the conceptual aspects of picture-making. In this plate, a woman’s hand, twisting gracefully in space, is rendered with a shallow depth of field. Two fingers appear in sharp focus, and extend towards the viewer, while the remaining portion of the hand appears blurred against a dark backdrop. Seductive and ghostly, the visual allure of this image derives from Spagnoli’s deep understanding and fascination with the daguerreotype process.
