This bold photograph celebrates the engineering might of the era. The Niagara Suspension Bridge, built in 1855 by engineer John Roebling (1806-1869), was 825 feet long, with two decks. The upper deck was for railroad traffic; the lower one (shown here) was used by pedestrians and horse-drawn vehicles. The plunging spatial recession of this image was typical of the visual style of stereo photographers.
