Francis Blake’s interest in photography began in 1884 when he built an extensive photographic laboratory on the grounds of his home. He began experimenting with high-speed photography in 1886 and made focal-plane shutters of his own design. As demonstrated in this image, these shutters allowed Blake to freeze the gait of a horse with exposures as rapid as 1/2000th of a second.
