DescriptionImage(s) of overlapping news clippings posted on a wall.Gallery LabelPrior to regulated street advertisements, bill posters in 1860s New York City scrambled to paste their flyers before their competitors claimed the best locations, often working under cover of night.
Edward Anthony, who with his brother Henry operated one of the city’s first camera and photographic supply companies, produced this stereograph view of a typical site. The two images placed next to each show advertisements for P.T. Barnum’s museum and theatrical performances in the Bowery theaters. The jumble of texts would have appeared three-dimensionally when seen through a viewing device (known as a stereoscope), creating a dynamic viewing experience.
