DescriptionImage of man sitting in profile on the steps of a building while reading a newspaper. A giant urn rests on a pedestal beside him.Gallery LabelWhile some Street Photographers embraced the gritty grain that could come from using 35mm film, Ilse Bing achieved refined, sharp–focused prints like this one, which could be easily enlarged without losing detail. An early artistic photographer to take the 35mm format seriously, Bing purchased her first Leica camera in 1929. Handheld 35mm cameras like Leicas brought a revolutionary speed and portability to photography, making many of the photographs in this exhibition possible for the first time.
