Paul Strand had an enormously long and influential career, from the 1910s to the 1960s. Strand's work evolved through several phases, from soft-focus Pictorialism to modernist abstraction to a deep and enduring interest in the human condition. This image, made toward the end of his career, is one of his most personal. It depicts the overgrown walkway of his own backyard garden, on his property in Orgeval, France. Quiet and contemplative, this work has much to say about time and change, the endless vitality of nature and the finite span of a single life.
