This image is from a series of views taken in 1854-1856 and published in the San Francisco Album: Photographs of the Most Beautiful Views and Public Buildings of San Francisco (1856), the first photographic survey of an American city. This is Kearny Street, in the heart of San Francisco. The city's dynamic economy is conveyed by the variety of businesses and signs visible here. One of these signs marks the daguerreotype studio of James M. Ford, which opened in September 1854.
