DescriptionImage of gas stations (Chevron, Texaco) along the street.Gallery LabelIn this photograph, Stephen Shore focuses on familiar aspects of American roadside culture: gas stations, traffic lights and advertising signage. He composes this vernacular landscape to highlight the nuances of atmosphere, color and form.
Shore was among a group of photographers in the early 1970s who fully embraced the new formal and conceptual possibilities of color photography, which, until then, had been largely relegated to commercial uses.
