DescriptionImage of a child's hand against the back of a figure wearing a plaid coat.Gallery LabelHenri Leighton brings our attention to the small hand of a child and the basic human need for closeness and touch, even in a crowd of strangers. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, to a working-class family, Leighton served as a cryptographer (code breaker) in the Army Air Force during World War II. After the war, he moved to New York where he photographed tender moments of Black life in the city like this one.
