DescriptionImage of a bearded man with dishelved hair that covers his ears. He's wearing a jacket and collared shirt with a loose tie. Light shines on the right side of his face.Gallery LabelWalt Whitman (1819–92) had already published several editions of his poem Leaves of Grass by the time Jeremiah Gurney made this distinguished portrait of the writer. Gurney, who made a name for himself producing large scale daguerreotypes, ran one of New York City’s most elegant portrait studios. Here, he photographed both everyday New Yorkers and noted celebrities. After the mid-1850s, he partnered with Charles D. Fredericks, who had expertise in paper processes and ran an operation in Paris under both their names.
