DescriptionImage of two men sitting on an airplane wing with their legs crossed. The look out towards a clear sky.Gallery LabelWith exacting, geometric simplicity, Tosh Matsumoto composed this image of two men sitting cross-legged on the wing of an airplane. Characteristic of much of his work, the image conveys a sense of inner quietude.
Matsumoto taught himself photography while forced to live in the Granada Relocation Center Japanese internment camp in eastern Colorado during World War II. In 1944, he moved to New York City, where he worked for a fashion photographer and continued to pursue his personal photography. He exhibited his work with the Photo League and in two exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
