Nat Fein, an experienced New York news photographer, captured the essence of the last days of Babe Ruth (1895–1948) in this iconic, Pulitzer Prize-winning image. Fein recorded Ruth standing at home plate at Yankee Stadium, bowing to the crowd, in a ceremony to retire his jersey number. Made only months before Ruth’s untimely death, this image shows the once robust slugger standing stooped and thin, a shadow of his former self.
