DescriptionDark image of a man and a woman standing beneath lighted signs that read "PLANTERS HOTEL". The corner of the hotel is illuminated.Gallery LabelFor a photograph taken during the day, Yasuhiro Ishimoto’s print is astonishingly dark. This high contrast between dark and light tones is achieved in part through printing in the darkroom using a color filter to remove gray mid-tones. His preference for high contrast printing and technical exactness were influenced by Harry Callahan, who taught Ishimoto at the Institute of Design in Chicago.
Ishimoto’s first photography teachers were fellow prisoners at the Amache internment camp in Colorado, a concentration camp for Japanese Americans, where Ishimoto was detained from 1941 to 1945.
