Frederick Monsen was originally an ethnologist and archaeologist. He worked for several government expeditions, including the U.S.Mexico Boundary Geological Survey and the Yosemite National Park Survey. Later, Monsen used a handheld camera, like many other amateurs, to photograph American Indians in New Mexico. This elegantly composed portrait evokes a warm sense of dignity and candor.
