DescriptionImage of African (Kenya) child with her father.Exhibition HistoryRotation 25. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, October 19, 2018- March 17, 2019, no cat.
In this portrait, Fazal Sheikh conveys the strength and sadness of his subjects with dignity and
empathy. Between 1992 and 1994, Sheikh spent time photographing Somali refugees escaping violence as they found temporary sanctuary in camps along the Kenyan border. Here, Sheikh focuses on the eight-year-old Hadija, who returns Sheikh’s gaze. Hadija remained mute after being separated from her mother at the border crossing. Her father appears in the portrait as a steadying yet peripheral presence.
