DescriptionScenic view of river, mountains, with two men fishing in the foreground.Gallery Label
F. Jay Haynes traveled extensively throughout Washington and Oregon in 1882–1883. He took a large number of views, including this one, along the Columbia River. The two men on the bank of the river here highlight Haynes’ desire to present the West as a rich and relatively safe region to be visited and inhabited. Haynes was the official photographer of the Northern Pacific Railroad. His abundant views were used in advertising brochures for the company.
