While the maker of this image remains unknown, evidence suggests that it may have been produced in Sag Harbor, New York, a bustling harbor town at the eastern end of Long Island. An astonishing artistic and technical achievement, this plate was made under challenging conditions, far from the conveniences and controlled lighting of the daguerreotypist's own studio. This plate is distinguished by its remarkable, whole plate size and the animation of its composition.
