Gallery Label
Two boys interrupt their summer afternoon enjoying a spraying fire hydrant to pose for Leonard Freed’s camera. Raising their fists to flex a muscle and looking determinedly into the camera, the boys echo the confidence and solidarity that characterized the Black empowerment movements growing in Harlem at this time. Freed’s closeness creates a tangle of limbs coming in and out of the picture’s frame. But it’s the boy’s undeniable gaze down into the camera that arrests our eyes.
