Gallery Label
In this woodcut by Peter Behrens, two people kiss. Their lighter and darker brown hair entwine in the simulation of an embrace. The lack of other identifying features makes it difficult to interpret their gender identities. Although the subjects are printed in six colors, Behrens omitted any shading, flattening the image.
The tangle of submerged vegetation in Monet’s Water Lilies is reminiscent of the interlaced hair in this woodcut.
