One of the pioneering photographers of the American West, Timothy O'Sullivan worked in a vast region between Colorado and California from 1867 to 1874. In 1871, his team made an arduous month-long ascent of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Traveling in a boat named the Picture, O'Sullivan stopped frequently to record the stark beauty of this vast and unforgiving landscape. Here, he captures the river, the surrounding canyon and the Picture (with his portable processing tent), with one of his companions at work.
