Davis is known for her photographs of such colossal and mysterious subjects as the pyramids of Egypt and the icebergs of the Arctic. This work combines the majestic simplicity of a nineteenth-century vision with a distinctly contemporary mood of elegy. Begun at a time when her friend Robert Mapplethorpe was dying of AIDS, Davis's icebergs are symbolic of both the grandeur and transience of human life. No matter how large in size, every iceberg is destined to melt away into the surrounding ocean, eventually to vanish without a trace.
