This photograph is one of the most memorable photographs of the Civil Rights era. Here, Charles Moore depicts the use by police of high-pressure fire hoses to break up a civil rights march in Birmingham, Alabama, on May 3, 1963.  When published in a dramatic 11-page photo-essay in Life magazine, Moore’s pictures helped galvanize national support for the Civil Rights movement.  This essay marked a turning point in public opinion on this important civic and moral issue.
