DescriptionArtist's stamp and label on back of print. Image of two black men and one woman on the street during Birmingham riots.Gallery LabelThis photograph is one of the most memorable photographs of the Civil Rights era. Here, Charles Moore depicts the use by police of high-pressure fire hoses to break up a civil rights march in Birmingham, Alabama, on May 3, 1963. When published in a dramatic 11-page photo-essay in Life magazine, Moore’s pictures helped galvanize national support for the Civil Rights movement. This essay marked a turning point in public opinion on this important civic and moral issue.
