This work is from Marvin Newman’s master’s thesis project. It depicts a street picture conceived “upside down,” so that pedestrians appear to be transformed into ghostly shadows. Newman took up photography at the age of 16, and went on to study with Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind at the famed Institute of Design in Chicago, where he earned a master’s degree in 1952. He enjoyed a successful professional career, working for magazines such as Sports Illustrated, Life, and Look.
