Bertha Jaques, a Chicago printmaker and member of the Wild Flower Preservation Society, created more than 1,000 cyanotype photograms of botanical specimens. While often made as studies for her etchings, these were also exhibited as independent works of art at the Art Institute of Chicago and elsewhere. These elegant shadow-images, made without a camera by placing the plant specimens directly on light-sensitive paper, occupy a middle ground between the realms of abstraction and documentary.
