DescriptionAerial image of a dense city with skyscrapers clustered near the top center of the frame.Gallery LabelIn 1906, photojournalist James Hare made this aerial view of Manhattan during an eventful hot air balloon ride with French balloonists. At one point during the adventure, as the balloon began to sink, Hare threw the men’s overcoats and many of his negatives overboard to lighten the load. Hare’s tactics worked long enough to take this aerial view before the balloon sank again in Flushing Bay. All but six of Hare’s negatives were destroyed.
