Born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, the American avant-garde writer Gertude Stein (1874-1946) lived most of her life in France, where she regularly associated with sell-known vangauard artists and writers of the day, including the painters Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, and the poet Guillaume Apollinaire. Her difficult and abstract works include Tender Buttons (1914) and The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas (1933).
