Michael Kenna is perhaps best known for his elegant, moody landscapes captured in his travels around the world. Kenna has chosen to photograph frequently at night, fascinated by the inherent unpredictability of working in near-total darkness. Because of his long exposures, various kinds of movement—atmospheric change or the circling of stars across the night sky—can lead to unexpected visual results. Kenna has observed, “most intriguing of all is that it is possible to photograph what is impossible for the human eye to see—cumulative time.”
