DescriptionRearing horse; cowboy with a rope standing in front of horse.Gallery LabelSince 1972, Levinthal has photographed toy figures in order to explore aspects of our collective visual iconography. His "Modern Romance" series was inspired by the images of film noir and the look of Edward Hopper paintings. His "Western Series," begun in 1986, reflects Levinthal's childhood love of western movies and television programs. Working with a large 20x24-inch Polaroid camera, Levinthal uses this device's inherently shallow depth of field to heighten the ambiguity of his subjects. These images, like the frontier myths they evoke, are both iconic and artificial, a hybrid of fact and romance.
