Ira Martin studied at the White School (founded in 1914 in New York City by Clarence H. White) and was strongly influenced by its emphasis on the principles of design. In this urban scene, Martin carefully balances fact and abstraction, juxtaposing the hulking size of the modern skyscraper with the tiny neighboring tenement house. The strong graphic composition and softened details create a harmonious balance of form and tone.
