DescriptionPlate 38Gallery Label
George Barnard was one of the most active Civil War photographers. His best-known photographs document Union General William T. Sherman’s occupation of Atlanta and his infamous March to the Sea in late 1864 and early 1865. In this image, Barnard records the blasted ruin of what had been one of Atlanta’s finest homes. Barnard carried heavy equipment and used lengthy exposures so he couldn’t record actual combat. Yet, he repeatedly conveyed the terrible violence of war through the physical and human wreckage it left behind.
