Rotation 25. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, October 19, 2018- March 17, 2019, no cat.
Susan Rankaitis’s work draws upon a variety of influences: science, technology, and landscape
traditions. Rankaitis made this unique, cameraless image by pouring various chemicals onto silver gelatin paper. The chemical reaction produced rich striations of copper, ochre, blue, and rose. The final print might suggest the colorful veins of sedimentary rocks, color field paintings, or ink overlays of Chinese scrolls. The metallic surface of makes references to both nature and technology.
