The poet Edna St. Vincent Millay appears pensive in this carefully composed portrait. A feminist known for her independent spirit, Millay was the third woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize for poetry. Arnold Genthe took this portrait at the home of the publisher Mitchell Kennerley, in
Mamaroneck, New York. Celebrated for his portraits of writers and actors, Genthe established a successful portrait studio in San Francisco. In 1911, he moved to New York City, continuing his portraiture while also photographing dance performances.
