When it was first shown in the mid-1970s, William Eggleston’s color work was both revelatory and perplexing to general viewers. His pictures of banal subjects that had seemingly esoteric and private meanings suggested a new documentary style in photography. Some of his earliest images, such as this work, have become influential for a generation of photographers and filmmakers, including contemporary figures as Alec Soth, Wolfgang Tillmans, Sofia Coppola, and Gus Van Sant.
