DescriptionGrid of images presented in nine rows of nine. Images of parking structure, both interior and exterior. Some images have cars; most are empty.Exhibition HistoryRotation 26. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, March 29, 2019- August 25, 2019, no cat.
This grid of 81 identically sized images depicts the interior of a Los Angeles parking garage. Robbert Flick used his camera to explore this urban space as a study of light, shadow, and geometric form.
Born and raised in the Netherlands, Flick moved to Los Angeles in 1968 and began photographing the city’s sprawling, auto-centric landscape. When single images failed to convey the flux and movement that characterized his experience of driving through the city, Flick began to create sequential grids of multiple images. His approach reflected current trends in conceptual artistic practice that presented photographs as informational documents and as part of a series rather than as a singular, visual statement.
