Stripped of his garments, Jesus stands shackled to a column as two soldiers flog him with bundles of sticks. Christ's state of undress gave artists the license to represent an idealized human figure, making this episode a popular subject in art. The violence of the beating also served as an opportunity to explore the body in motion. Here, the application of white highlights emphasizes the exaggerated musculature of Christ and his two tormentors. All three figures adopt dramatic, twisting poses that allow the artist to represent the human figures from multiple points of view.
