The alienation of urban life became a frequent subject for several artistically minded street photographers during the 1950s. Louis Faurer’s view of four women standing on a New York City sidewalk in front of a movie poster suggests this theme. None of the women interacts with another. Instead, they appear immersed in private thoughts. Their stern expressions are juxtaposed with the image and text of the movie poster, which advertises an emotionally fraught narrative about love, loss and abandonment. Through this visual comparison, Faurer thus underscores the psychological uncertainty and loneliness of modern city life.
