After wartime service in the Pacific, Todd Webb arrived in New York in late 1945 and soon became part of the city’s photographic community. Many of his early images evoke a spirit of kinship and community—a reflection of the nation’s desire to return to normalcy after the war. Webb had a deep interest in vernacular culture and the rhythms and artifacts of everyday urban life. Here, a water hose has been rigged to provide city children with some much needed relief from the summer heat.
