The surrealist artist Max Ernst sits in the armchair of writer Jean Cocteau. His form is shrouded by the smoke from his cigarette, giving the image a sense of mystery. Arnold Newman was a master of creating environmental portraits to suggest aspects of his sitters’ personalities and occupations. Here, he worked to craft a portrait that suggests Ernst’s mysterious persona and subconscious creative drives.
