Steiner studied at the White School (founded in 1914 in New York City by Clarence H. White) in 1921-1922 before beginning a distinguished career as a photographer, picture editor and filmmaker. The White School's design principles-balancing fact and beauty-were applied to all forms of photography, from art to commercial and advertising work. This graphic and amusing photograph reflects the idea (as expressed by White School teacher Margaret Watkins) that "commonplace articles show curves and angles which can be repeated with the varying pattern of a fugue."
