In 1929, Berenice Abbott began a personal project to photograph the texture of life in New York City.  She gained official support for this project in 1935, with a grant from the Federal Art Project of the Roosevelt administration’s Works Progress Administration.  Over the next four years, Abbott used her large format view camera to record the city’s buildings, docks, bridges, churches and street life.  Each of these images was accompanied by carefully recorded historical and technical data.
