Lewis Hine is one of the giants of American social documentary photography. In 1904, as a teacher in New York City, Hine began producing an important series of pictures of immigrants at Ellis Island, a project spurred by current political debates about immigration.  Hine's records of these fresh arrivals unite the aims of the ethnographic image and the formal studio portrait.  He was interested in the details of dress, for example, while deeply respectful of the individual dignity of his subjects. Hine went on to record other subjects of topical interest in the early 20th century, from child labor in factories, to the adult industrial work force, to the construction of the Empire State Building in 1931-32.
