Imogen Cunningham’s long and influential career spanned three-quarters of a century. She was one of the earliest of the purist photographers: artists who favored the use of sharp lenses, smoothsurface photographic papers and subjects chosen from everyday life. In 1932, with Edward Weston, Ansel Adams and a few other like-minded artists, she was a founding member of Group f/64, named for the smallest, sharpest setting of the view camera lens. This work is representative of her bold and unsentimental style. Here, the organic forms of the amaryllis plant take on a sculptural solidity.
