Gallery Label
Strand was one of the first artistic photographers to synthesize Pictorialist themes with a new, bolder, modern vision. Strand's first mature works, made in 1914-1916, depict human figures within the harsh geometry of the city. Here, the slightly asymmetrical frame, splatter marks on the wall, and ominous vacancy of the open window combine to create a mood of tension and unease. Strand thus charges the traditional mother and child motif with a prototypically modern tone of ambiguity and complexity.
