Rotation 1. The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO. June 17 – October 25, 2007, no cat.
With a respect for both artistic and documentary traditions, Strand combined technical purism with a deep sense of humanity. In the 1940s and 1950s he photographed in New England, France, Italy, Scotland and Egypt, paying consistent attention to agrarian and working-class people. The complexity of this small image stems from the individuality of the figures, the implied relationships among them, the textures of their environment and the musical rhythms of the overall composition.
