Paul Strand produced a portfolio of images of indigenous peoples, landscape, architecture and religious artifacts while living in Mexico in 1932–33. Educated at the Ethical Culture School in New York, Strand’s photographs reflect the teachings of his mentor, Lewis Hine—best known for his powerful images of child laborers and impoverished immigrants. This direct and objective portrait style, seen here in the studied expressions of the townsmen, was meant to capture the essential character of Mexico.
