Gallery Label
Edward Weston began in a soft-focus Romantic style in the 1910s, but by the mid-1920s had shifted to a crisply focused, modernist approach. Weston's characteristically straight or purist style is seen in this classic still-life image, one of his most famous works of the period. This photograph is a contact print from an 8 x 10-inch negative. Since there is no enlarging involved in this process, the resulting prints convey an astonishing level of detail and immediacy. In this image, Weston transforms a common pepper into something monumental and timeless.
