Edward Weston made several nude studies of his young son Neil during the early to mid-1920s. Here, Neil’s body is isolated against a dark backdrop and cropped to emphasize its graceful form. The minimal yet dramatic composition helps give the youthful body both a lyrical and sculptural appearance. This work shows Weston’s movement from soft-focused tendencies toward a more modern style.
