While relatively rare, there are, in fact, reluctant celebrities. The great novelist William Faulkner (1897-1962) was a deeply private person who rarely ventured far from his home in Oxford, Mississippi. Here, Cartier-Bresson captures a paradoxical but telling likeness, made as Faulkner turns away from the camera. Faulkner's dogs, agitated and protective, seem to echo their master's discomfort.
