To make this unique landscape view, Lois Conner used a banquet camera, which produces a panoramic negative. The orientation of the landscape evokes parallels with Chinese scroll painting. This is a platinum print, which is characterized by matte surfaces and tonal nuance. Conner first traveled to China on a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1984. She became fascinated by the pictorial traditions of Chinese art, as well as the contemporary relationship between nature and culture. Since then, she has returned regularly to take photographs throughout the country.
